William McCulley, bassoon
Mr. McCulley, bassoonist, began musical studies when he was eleven. He began studying privately at thirteen with Dr. Kari Shea of Annapolis. When he was fourteen he joined the DC Youth Orchestra program performing in their top ensemble. In 2005, Mr. McCulley attended the Interlochen Center for the Arts under the Emerson full scholarship program. At Interlochen, Mr. McCulley performed in their top orchestra, was a finalist in the Interlochen concerto competition, and studied with Jeff Keesecker, Dr. Jeff Lyman, and Henry Skolnick on contra bassoon. Also in 2005, he began studies with Susan Heineman and Steven Wilson, both of the National Symphony. In 2006 Mr. McCulley began studies at the Peabody Conservatory of Music of Johns Hopkins University working towards a degree in Bassoon Performance. He currently studies with Phillip Kolker. At Peabody he has had master classes with Leonard Hindell, David K. Van Hoesen, and Michael McCraw for baroque bassoon. Mr. McCulley has performed with such ensembles as the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, DC Youth Orchestra, Prince Georges Philharmonic Orchestra, Interlochen Philharmonic Orchestra, Columbia Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra; and has performed at places such as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Walters Art Museum, The Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, and Carnegie Hall. In his spare time, Mr. McCulley enjoys sailing, skiing, reading, and cooking.
